fantasybookHere’s a site that lists the top 100 fantasy books of all time, updated monthly! I’m not sure if this is done by poll or vote or sales. Still, here’s the current top ten:

  1. J R R Tolkien -Lord Of the Rings Trilogy
  2. J K Rowling -Harry Potter Series
  3. J R R Tolkien -The Hobbit
  4. Robert Jordan -Wheel of Time Series
  5. George R R Martin -A Song of Ice & Fire
  6. C S Lewis -The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe
  7. David Eddings -The Belgariad Series
  8. Terry Goodkind -Wizard’s First Rule
  9. Raymond E Feist -Magician
  10. Philip Pullman -His Dark Materials Trilogy

Though the list has a number of books that I’d question as fantasy (or consider to only be very loosely fitting), it’s a very interesting list indeed. Check it out!

There are a couple on there that seem a bit… interesting to see on a fantasy book list. But I was pleased at how many titles I’d read, or at least recognized.

There is no questioning the list as containing the best of all time but it would also be good to see some newer writers coming into the frame.

I agree on both accounts — there are some books on the list I find funny to see there. And it would be nice to see some of the newer writers highlighted on this list, too. I guess Fantasy has a rather deep legacy — newcomers to the genre have to surmount the established classics of those who have come before. It seems to be a difficult thing unless you have a really brilliant concept for a type of fantasy not seen before.

I like it. Sort of, the LOTR series certainly should be at the top, I mean it is fantasy really. The fantasy. At the same side of the coin… how does Harry Potter beat out The Hobbit!

I’m just kidding around, Harry Potter wasn’t bad. And personally I find ranking most books as difficult, what are the criteria? How are they chosen? If it is democratic than it is probably more of a popularity contest then anything else. And I wonder, if it is democratic, how many people voted for LOTR because of the movie…
