What about a back-handed compliment? “I didn’t think you cared enough about humans to take on an Earthian form.” Like that. It’s sarcastic enough to not be swatted aside as flattery, but nice-ish enough to diffuse things a little.

Kinda reminds me of one of my characters… pretends to be stoic, but is actually pretty expressive. …I hope I’m not subconsciously modeling him after Tai. That would not surprise me.
