Tai: Sorry. I’m from out of town. *mumbles* No one told me I’d be bringing water to the king.
Scholar: That is not an excuse.
Edward: The boy has earned himself a break. It does, as he says, suck to be him at the moment.
Tai: *looks up at Edward* So you’re… building your own throne room? Is there a shortage of workers or something?
Scholar: *huffs at Tai* Where are your manners?
Tai: I’d say put Mister Huffy here to work. *thumbs at the Scholar* And clean your hands. Kings don’t go around building walls.

I guess Tai doesn’t really care all that much about authority. Then again as far as he is concerned Edward doesn’t really have all that much authority does he? Edward really has no power over Tai at all, Tai has no obligations towards him either, he doesn’t love him or fear him so Tai can basically say and do whatever he likes so long as it doesn’t mess his mission up too much.
I am fast liking Tai more and more.

You’re right on the money.
Tai doesn’t take orders from anyone unless he chooses to. He’ll fight tooth and nail if he’s forced to do something against his will… his freedom is very important to him, after all that he’s been through. He uses little formality unless he sees fit to display it. Someone has to EARN his respect before he gives it. Afterall, he was nobility where he grew up in Nefol. He considers himself on the same level as the kings of the Blue Planet.
In the situation with Zemi, Tai’s agreed to help Zemi out because Zemi has hinted that it will lead to Tai’s release and freedom. But even Zemi knew that it wouldn’t work unless he could coax Tai to choose to do it on his own. That’s part of the reason Zemi threw Kip into the equation.
